Abstract

Abstract

The arts of poetry and cinema rely on unique and dissimilar reference points and devices. For example, it is difficult for poetry to have the visual power of cinema. Comparably, cinema cannot have the same impact as a poem. The relation between cinema and poetry is realized in their structural value as artistic genres that address the same human issues, yet through different forms and styles. Cinema and poetry also share and exchange artistic techniques and methods that make these genres similar, harmonious and beneficial to each other. This paper seeks to explore the cinematic techniques in the works of Libyan poet, Hassan al-Sousi, as narrative poetry texts. The paper employs descriptive and analytical approaches and focuses on issues such as camera movement, image dimensions, controlling perspective and zooming, and dimming and lighting. The paper offers important findings on the interrelation between a visual and a non-visual field, the contextual and artistic similarities between cinema and poetry, and the cinematization of poetry using modern techniques as a poet crosses from the art of poetry to the art of cinema.

Key words: Cinema, poetry, techniques, image, Hassan Al-Sousi.
