Abstract
This study addresses the conditions and factors affecting the formation of Bahraini journalism in 1939. To achieve this and to gain a better understating of the historical events around this period, a literature review was conducted followed by interviews with six specialists in journalism and culture. The study concluded that social and cultural interactions between Bahrain and other countries created a need for newspapers that can convey the news of the world into Bahrain. It also concluded that Abdulla Al-Zaid played a major role in establishing the first Bahraini newspaper. Other factors affecting the birth of journalism include the influence of Arabic and Islamic journalism on Bahrain, British presence and the establishment of Christian missions. All of these created a cultural and social milieu that motivated some Bahrainis to own media through which they can influence and educate the masses. The establishment of journalism in Bahrain has relied on educational projects and the establishment of cultural and literary clubs and libraries.
