Abstract
This research attempts to observe the patterns of imperatives that are prominent in Jamil Butsaina’s poetry, which include command, prohibition, interrogation, and call. Thereafter, this research investigates their rhetorical implications that contribute to enriching the meaning through shifting its original meaning to a new rhetorical meaning created by the context in which it is employed. It is primarily related to the psychological context of the poet. Our analysis was based on a descriptive, analytical approach that focused on the aesthetics of style, and relied on some psychological aspects, since Jamil Butsaina’s poetry is an implicit flirtation which is related mostly to the soul and emotions unlike than explicit flirtation. Many significant results were concluded in this research i.e. the diversity of rhetorical purposes in Jamil Butsaina’s poetry particularly in imperatives which expressed the purposes of their user.
Key words: Rhetoric; demand; imperatives, command; prohibition; call.
