Abstract

Abstract

Thinking, with its various mental processes, is a defining feature of humans. Some have likened thinking to breathing as it is indispensable for everyone. Through thinking, one is able to discover the existence of God and understand the laws of the universe and nature. Hence Al-Ghazali considered thinking the key to lights and the threshold to insights. One of the key functions of thinking is addressing the problems we face in our daily lives. Our quality of thinking determines our quality of life. This paper examines critical thinking as a tool to solve problems by examining examples from the life of Prophet Mohammed taken from Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Through an inductive analytical approach, the paper developed a practical model of critical thinking based on eight key skills. The paper also stressed the importance of emotions in critical thinking. When identifying and solving problems, a critical thinker needs to address emotions and to balance pure rationality and the collective consciousness of a people. Such consciousness develops over centuries and cannot be changed overnight. Patience and wisdom are required to change a society.
