Abstract

The issue of Western influence on Arabic literature has been a serious issue of study and debate that preoccupied literary and cultural circles. This debate has had a clear effect on the image of modern Arabic literature and its formation. Calls for renewal could be heard at every stage of literary history, yet one need not go extremes in these calls. In fact, benefitting from tradition and knowing the unique characteristics of each culture and society are important things to consider when discussing renewal and influence. Accordingly, this paper examines the Western influence on Arabic literature in a historical context and discusses modernism and its reflections in Arabic literature as a key example of influence.

Keywords: Arabic literature, Modernism, Western influence.
