Abstract

Abstract

This study is about the concept of peripheral meaning in Arabic and its influence on the receiver of the message in understanding it. The explanation of this concept is to verify the fact that meaning among contemporary Arabs is of two types: central meaning and peripheral meaning, the former is shared by all the individuals of the same language structure and are all satisfied with them. The message reached them as an approximate understanding that they contend with in their life. The study follows the descriptive and analytical methods. It discusses meanings among the traditional scholars and contemporary westerners and Arabs. Relevant examples that are related to peripheral meaning are given on the syntactical, morphological and lexical levels. This is in addition to the examples of peripheral meanings and its influence on the media, literature, psychology and counseling. The study concludes that central meaning represents the daily language use of the people, but when it comes out under new shades of meaning due to context and other surrounding factors, it is then termed as peripheral meaning.

Keywords: Peripheral meaning, syntax, morphology, lexical meaning.
