Between Valid Analysis and Wrong Interpretation: A Descriptive Analytical Study of Approaches to Qurʾanic Text

Abstract

The Qurʾanic text is a sacred divine text which explains the will of God, and Prophet Muḥammad was the one who addressed any problems faced by the Muslims in understanding the text, in addition to the language competencies possessed by the Muslims of his time. However, complexities emerged post-Prophetic era even though God has made the Qurʾān easy for remembrance. The reason for this is the demise of the Prophet on the one hand, and the vast temporal gap between the time of the revelation and the beginning of codification, which took nearly two centuries, and during which the language underwent some changes and meaning of words was expanded. Due to this, many interpretations emerged due to linguistic and hermeneutical differences. Hence, this research aims to clarify this problem by addressing both linguistic and hermeneutical approaches in tafsīr.
