al-Imām al-ʿAlīmī on the Compilation of Qurʾān: A Study of Collected Views from His Exegesis Faṭh al-Raḥmān

Abstract

This research paper deals with the choices of Imam Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Alimi, Mujir al-Din al-Maqdisi al-Hanbali (d.927 AH) in matters of collecting the Noble Qur’an as it was collected from his interpretation of Fath al-Rahman. His statements relating to eight general issues were collected, and partial issues related to the collection of the Holy Qur’an were included with them. These issues are the collection of the Noble Qur’an, the number of Ottoman Qur’ans, improvements to the Qur’an of Othman, may God be pleased with him, the violation of the Qur’an of Othman, may God be pleased with him, the concept of the verse and the surah, the order of verses and surahs, the number of the Qur’an’s chapters and verses, the number of words and letters of the Qur’an. This research paper aims to explain the reasons for collecting the Noble Qur’an, how to collect it in the Qur’ans, the improvements contained in its drawing and control, and to show the limitation of its surahs, verses, words, letters, and what is related to that, as it is preserved from increase and decrease. In this regard, I followed the inductive and analytical approach and concluded a number of important findings regarding the scholar and his approach to the study of the Noble Qur’an.
