INTRODUCTION: Rapid advances in genetic technology have improved the diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases but also raise ethical and Shariah concerns, particularly regarding human intervention in fitrah, genetic manipulation, and unclear fiqh guidance. This study explored the ethical and Shariah considerations in contemporary genetic practices based on the views and experiences of respondents involved in genetic issues within the context of Muslims in Malaysia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was employed, with data analysed through inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three themes were identified: Shariah limits in genetic technology, ethical concerns regarding genetic manipulation, and the need for contemporary fiqh guidelines. Acceptance of genetic practices was influenced by legal clarity, concerns about exceeding human fitrah, uncertainty regarding long-term consequences, and the potential misuse of genetic technology. CONCLUSION: The findings highlight the need for greater integration of genetic science, ethics, and Shariah in addressing contemporary genetic issues. This study provides empirical insight into gaps in practical fiqh guidance and offers a foundation for developing context-sensitive ethical and Shariah frameworks aligned with ongoing scientific developments.
