(The Effect of the Grammatical Articles on Textual Interpretation: The Case of the Definite Article of “al-Mushrikin” in Surah al-Tawbah as a Model)

This study focuses on the effects of grammatical Articles on textual interpretation by studying the case of the definitive article (al), which could refer to a historical and relative meaning (lām al-ʿahd - the article of familiarity), or to an absolute and general meaning (lām al-jins the Generic article). The determination of its meaning would affect meaning and interpretation. The article sheds light on the development of the theories about the meaning of this definite article in Arabic linguistic, grammatical and sources related to the Islamic creed. It investigates into the possible meanings of this article as viewed by the interpreters of the holy Quran and in particular the meaning of the word ‘musyrikūn’ in the surah Al-Taubah.
