(Challenges of Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers at the Institute of Teaching Arabic Language at the Islamic University of Madinah: Students’ Perspectives)
Abstract
The aim of this study is to identify the challenges faced by students at the Institute of Arabic Language Teaching for Non-Native Speakers at the Islamic University of Madinah, and to explore mechanisms for overcoming these challenges in order to enhance the process of learning Arabic as a second language. The study sample consisted of 150 students enrolled at the institute. The researcher adopted the descriptive-analytical method, and data were collected through a questionnaire comprising 37 items distributed across five domains: the educational environment, curricula, Arabic as an academic subject, students, and teachers. The study yielded several findings, the most significant of which indicate that, from the students’ perspectives, the greatest obstacles to learning Arabic pertain to Arabic as an academic subject, with a mean score of 3.515 (moderate level). This was followed by obstacles related to the educational environment (mean = 3.014, moderate level), then by curriculum-related obstacles (mean = 2.435, low level), student-related obstacles (mean = 2.427, low level), and finally, teacher-related obstacles (mean = 2.243, low level).
