Abstract

The study examines the use of debate as a tool to teach Arabic as a second language based on the strategies of active learning. The study is based on functional theories of education. It benefits from the communicative approach that has proved its educational merit through procedural communication that reinforces and develops the skills of learners through conversation and comprehension. The study employs the descriptive analytical method to conclude that debate is important for teaching Arabic as a second language. The study also clarifies the vital role of debate in developing creative and critical thinking skills as learners use these skills to formulate, express and defend their opinions.
