The abstract is the first part of any research that readers typically encounter, regardless of the type of research, whether it be an article in a peer-reviewed journal or a thesis submitted by a graduate student. Therefore, it is essential to pay close attention when writing an abstract, as it may represent the most critical component of the entire research. This article focuses on common errors in writing research abstracts, whether these errors are formal (relating to the design and content of the abstract) or stylistic (concerning language and punctuation). The article adopts a mixed-methods approach, both quantitative and qualitative, using content analysis to examine forty research abstracts written by graduate students at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Key findings reveal that nearly all students were familiar with the formal elements of an abstract, primarily because they followed the guidance of their supervisors to enhance the quality of their research. However, challenges arose in terms of stylistic issues, particularly in presenting clear and coherent writing that effectively connects the formal elements of the abstract in a concise and logical sequence. This difficulty was attributed to the fact that Arabic is not the students’ native language. The article also highlighted that some native Arabic speakers face similar challenges in writing their research. Consequently, the article recommends conducting further research to investigate this issue among graduate students for whom Arabic is their first language.
