Introduction: A preliminary Malay version questionnaire to investigate the impact of hearing loss to Islamic understanding and practices was developed in 2017. It is known as ‘Inventori Persepsi Bagi Muslim Yang Memiliki Masalah Pendengaran (IPM3P). This questionnaire consists of 3 subscales (perception on obligation, practice, and difficulty) with 59 items in total. The aim of this study is to pilot the preliminary validity and reliability of the IPM3P questionnaire before it can undergo a full validation scale.
Methods: Content validation has been conducted among 6 experts. The pre-testing and face validity was conducted on 2 experts and 10 laymen. The early version of IPM3P was modified based on comments and suggestions from subjects in content validation, face validation and pre-testing stage. The modified version of IPM3P was distributed to 40 Muslim adults with hearing impairment for internal consistency testing.
Results: From the content validation, face validation and pre-testing stage, 24 items remained, 34 items have been modified, and 1 item has been split into two items. These yield a total of 60 items in the modified version of IPM3P. The internal consistency analysis revealed good overall consistency with Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.857.
Conclusion: This study gives an early indication that the IPM3P questionnaire could be a reliable tool in measuring the impact of hearing loss on various aspects of Islamic understanding and practices among Muslim adult in Malaysia. Further reliability and validation study is needed to confirm this notion.
