Generative AI Policy

The Journal of Architecture, Planning and Construction Management (JAPCM) recognizes that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and AI-assisted technologies present both opportunities and challenges in academic publishing. To ensure transparency, integrity, and accountability in scholarly communication, JAPCM adopts the following policy regarding the use of generative AI in the preparation, review, and publication of manuscripts.

For Authors

  • Authors may use generative AI tools (e.g., for improving grammar, language, or readability) only under strict human oversight. The author(s) remain fully responsible and accountable for the content submitted.
  • The use of AI tools must be disclosed in the manuscript (e.g., in the acknowledgements or methodology section), stating clearly the purpose, tool name, and version used.
  • AI and AI-assisted technologies cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship implies accountability and responsibility, which are human-only tasks.
  • The use of AI to generate or alter figures, images, or artwork is not permitted, except where AI is an explicit part of the research methodology. In such cases, a clear and reproducible description must be provided in the methods section.
  • AI-generated graphical abstracts or cover art submissions are strictly prohibited unless prior permission is granted by the editorial board.
  • JAPCM uses plagiarism and AI-detection tools (e.g., Turnitin) to evaluate submissions. While the similarity index must not exceed 20%, there is no fixed threshold for AI-generated content. Instead, the editorial team assesses the appropriateness of AI use on a case-by-case basis to ensure originality, academic rigor, and author accountability.

For Reviewers and Editors

  • Reviewers and editors must not upload manuscripts, or any part of them, into publicly available generative AI tools, to safeguard confidentiality and intellectual property.
  • Peer review reports and editorial decision letters must be the product of the reviewer’s or editor’s own critical thinking. Generative AI cannot be used to draft, summarize, or evaluate manuscripts.
  • Editors and reviewers remain fully accountable for the quality, integrity, and confidentiality of their assessments.
  • JAPCM may use in-house AI-assisted technologies (e.g., plagiarism checks, reviewer matching) where appropriate. These tools are applied in ways that preserve confidentiality and comply with ethical publishing standards.

Commitment to Integrity

JAPCM acknowledges that AI technologies are evolving rapidly. This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to ensure that the use of AI in scholarly publishing is transparent, ethical, and aligned with international best practices.
