Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to adapt the Vestibular Rehabilitation Benefit Questionnaire (VRBQ) in order to cater for the limited availability of Malay vestibular questionnaire.

Methods: After the permission from the original writer was obtained, the process of adaptation begins, this includes, first: forward-translation into Malay.  Second, backward translation into English. Third, content and face validations were conducted on the newly translated questionnaire. Finally, eight participants diagnosed with vestibular problems were recruited to answer the VRBQ-Malay for the validation process. They were enlisted from Rehabilitation Unit at International Islamic University Malaysia Medical Centre (IIUMMC) and Hearing and Speech Clinic at Jalan Hospital Campus (JHC).

Results: Based on the comments and suggestions made by the validators, some changes in terms of the appropriateness of the instructions, items and the sentence structure were made. Ten people expressed that they were able to understand well the questionnaire. For the reliability analysis, the VRBQ-Malay revealed a good internal consistency based on Cronbach alpha value of 0.95.

Conclusion: A validated VRBQ-Malay will enable a therapist to observe the improvement made by the patients who undergo vestibular rehabilitation. It would be a great advantage for a clinician to know their current symptoms that might have been overlooked during the session.
