About the Journal
Al-Shajarah, the academic journal of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), was established in 1996. Since its inception, it has served as a vital platform for advancing scholarly discourse in Islamic thought, civilisation, science, and Malay world studies.
The journal was founded to uphold ISTAC’s mission of fostering an intellectual tradition that integrates revelation, reason, and culture in addressing the challenges of the contemporary world. From its earliest issues, Al-Shajarah has provided space for original and critical research, encouraging dialogue across disciplines while remaining firmly rooted in the values of Islamic scholarship.
Al-Shajarah welcomes contributions that examine epistemological and scientific challenges faced by Muslims today, as well as articles that engage with diverse religions, schools of thought, and ideologies to enrich the development of an Islamic philosophy of science. Studies on Islamic art, architecture, and heritage, together with book reviews and notes, also form part of its tradition of expanding the frontiers of knowledge.
The journal is published twice a year (June–July and November–December). It is indexed in the Web of Science (Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Current Contents/Arts & Humanities), Scopus, and MyCite. Manuscripts are accepted exclusively through the online submission system, while the Editorial Office address is intended only for correspondence and administrative purposes.
