Abstract

This paper seeks to explore Prophet (p.b.u.h.)’s methodology in dealing with other religions based on textual analysis of selected historical incidents taking place during the time of revelation. The goal of this study is to analyse the text related to these incidents in order to expose the methodologies utilized by the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) in dealing with those involved in these events, i.e., non-Muslims. This work is significant as it provides genuine understanding of Prophet (p.b.u.h.)’s methodology in dealing with others’ belief system, which is relevant to the contemporary Muslim scholarship of comparative religion. This research starts with brief introduction followed by a discussion on: (1) what is the essence of Prophetic Methodology?; (2) Prophet (p.b.u.h.)’s descriptive and objective methods in light of al-×ikmah (Wisdom); (3) Prophet (p.b.u.h.)’s altruistic and analytical methods in light of al-MawÑiÐah al-×asanah (good advice); and (4) Prophet (p.b.u.h.)’s dialogical and pacific methods in light of al-JidÉl bil-Lati Hiya AÍsan (arguing with what is best). The historical, descriptive, and analytical methods are utilized in the entire study. This study concludes that Prophet (p.b.u.h.)’s methodology in dealing with other religions is dearly significant and relevant to the contemporary Muslim scholarship in the study of others’ religions, faiths, traditions, civilizations, customs, and ideologies.
