Digital Innovation in Islamic Banking: A Case Study of Bank Muamalat Malaysia's Marketing Strategy
Abstract
This case study examines how Bank Muamalat Malaysia balances Islamic banking principles with technological advancement in today's financial industry. Since its establishment in 1999, the bank has grown into a major player in Malaysia's Islamic banking sector, offering a range of Shariah-compliant products, including savings accounts, home financing, and investment services built on a profit-and-risk-sharing model rather than interest. In recent years, Bank Muamalat has integrated digital platforms into its marketing strategy while continuing to adhere to Islamic banking principles, supported by a leadership approach that prioritises modernising the bank's digital services without compromising Shariah compliance. However, the bank faces key challenges, including intense technological competition from conventional banks and persistent public misconceptions about the accessibility of Islamic banking. To address these issues, the bank has outlined strategic enhancements for 2025-2027, emphasising the development of customer education programmes and the expansion of user-friendly digital services. Drawing on a primary interview with an Operations Officer at Bank Muamalat, alongside a review of relevant literature, this case study offers insight into how Islamic financial institutions can pursue digital innovation while preserving their ethical and religious foundations.
