SURGICAL TREATMENT OF HALLUX VALGUS; A CASE REPORT

Abstract

Introduction: Hallux valgus (HV) is associated with laterally deviated great toe, and prominent metatarsal head. This disease usually asymptomatic, however in some cases it can cause pain and may cause discomfort when wearing footwear. It also can be associated with callosity and ulcer formation as a result of pressure from footwear on the bony prominence. In this case, clinical, treatment by reconstruction of deformity correction of hallux valgus are described.

Case report: We reported a 23 years old female presented with a 6 years history of bilateral hallux valgus. Her deformity progressed throughout the years, causing severe pain on weight bearing activity. Clinically she has bilateral flat foot with hallux valgus deformity which is more severe on her left foot. On plain radiograph, her deformity was classified as severe (Hallux Valgus Angle (HVA); 44.7º, Intermetatarsal angle (IMA);18º and Distal Metatarsal Articular Angle (DMMA) of 9º). In view of severity of deformity and persistent pain despite receiving analgesic and splinting, she was planned for surgical correction. Post-surgical correction shows improvement both clinical and radiological parameters with no immediate complication observed. Currently she still undergoes follow up to monitor her progress.

Conclusion: HV usually is an asymptomatic disease. Treatment is aimed at reducing pain and irritation at medial prominence. Treatment option depend on the symptoms and severity of the disease. Numerous surgical procedures have been described with good outcome. This surgical procedure is reserved for those who failed conservative treatment, and aimed to correct deformity, and to elevates the symptoms.
