The Muslim Minority in Myanmar: The Struggle for Identity amidst a Continuous Political Crisis
Keywords:Myanmar, Muslim minority, situation, challenges, resolution
The study aims to address the plight, struggles, and ongoing challenges faced by Myanmar's Muslim minority. It also suggests possible avenues to overcome the continuous state repression against them. The study employs historical methods to highlight the history of the arrival of Islam and the growth of the Muslim population in Myanmar. Descriptive methods are used to portray numerous types of systematic persecution and brutal state repression against the civil, political and economic rights of the Muslim community. The analytical method is used to analyze the situation and provide possible resolutions to bring about an end to the conflict. The study discovered that the crisis for Myanmar's Muslim minority began during the British occupation of Myanmar in the mid-nineteenth century. Since then, the crisis has persisted, each with its own set of triggers. In the present context, the crisis has become tense, especially after the tragic event that took place in Arakan in 2012. Although interventions have been made to stabilize the crisis at the international level, it still remains unabated. Hence, the study suggests that comprehensive resolution from within the country and manifold angles are needed to deal with the situation.
