Identifying the Challenges to Social Finance in the Mauritanian Fishing Industry

Abstract

In the context of Mauritania, the fishing industry is of vital importance. It serves as a key industry; it is the linchpin of the diversified economic and social development of the nation. It lays the cornerstone for the overall advancement of Mauritania. Its contributions to the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), to the populace's employment within the sector, and to the generation of public revenues that underpin all manner of public goods and essential governmental social programs are well-established. And yet, for all that potential, for all those contributions, the fishing industry faces some truly daunting, some truly formidable, and some truly manifold challenges. This academic article carefully identifies and analyzes several problems in more than one way. The problems it identifies relate mostly to the fishing industry's financing mechanisms; the quality and adequacy of its infrastructure; its complex regulatory framework; the environmental sustainability of its operations; and the pressure the sector is under from international competition. The study employs a qualitative research methodology. This investigation's findings shed light on the complex and multifaceted interplay of the economic, financial, legal, and operational problems that together keep the fishing industry from achieving its almost limitless promise in Mauritania
