Abstract

ABSTRACT: Pesticide contamination in aquatic environments poses a significant threat to ecosystems and public health due to the persistence and toxicity of these compounds. This review explores the degradation of pesticides in aqueous solutions using the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process under light irradiation, an advanced oxidation process (AOP). This review comprehensively examines the mechanism of action, which centers on generating hydroxyl radicals (OH) under light irradiation. Key operational parameters, including catalyst dosage, pH, and light intensity, are evaluated for their influence on degradation efficiency. The study highlights the advantages of the heterogeneous system over its homogeneous counterpart, notably improved catalyst recovery, reduced iron sludge production, and greater reusability. Furthermore, widely used pesticides such as atrazine, imidacloprid, and chlorpyrifos are highlighted due to their environmental persistence and extensive agricultural application. The review synthesizes current literature on catalyst development, process optimization, and degradation mechanisms, particularly focusing on coated zeolite applications. This study intends to improve understanding of the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process and direct future research toward more effective and sustainable pesticide removal from contaminated water sources by consolidating experimental findings.
