Abstract

Abstract

The study touches on the Prophetic Tradition in selecting names to indicate the significance of selecting names in Islamic practice. It has been observed lately names which are meaningless in Arabic and many try to westernize the names of their children and subsequently become popular in Muslim societies. Through deductive analytical method the study tries to explain some commendable and prohibited names in addition to the practice of the Prophet in changing names. The study had concluded among others: the right of the son on his father is for the latter to choose for him a good name; a chosen name must bear a good meaning that contains glad tiding and optimism; names which have despicable meaning and contrary to Islam are prohibited.
