Dowry is a form of appreciation in Islam to women to uplift their position and dignity. It is a gift given to the bride at the beginning of their new life. In spite of the noble purpose of dowry in the Islamic system, its nobility is affected by a custom practiced by the Muslim community of Sri Lanka known as the kaikoli. This tradition has spread amongst many Muslims and had negatively affected them in a significant way. There are studies which highlighted this from the social perspective and its negative effects on family members but to the best of the researcher’s knowledge, there has not been any study of the issue from the perspective of Fiqh. Therefore, there is a need to study and explain the judgement on kaikoli from the perspective of Fiqh and the real situation in Sri Lanka. This study tries to take on the issue through the analytical deductive and evaluative method in discussing and interpreting the issue to realize the best possible answer and explanation. Among the most important conclusions of the study are: kaikoli is a negative custom and foreign to Islam and a violation of its marital system. Therefore, to give kaikoli or requesting or acquiring it is forbidden in Islam as it negatively affect the society.
