Abstract

This article and interview unveil ways in which Shirley Geok-lin Lim addresses her status as a transnational wanderer in recent poetry, specifically in Walking Backwards: New Poems (2010), noting relevance to earlier fictional works such as Joss and Gold (2001). For the brief interview, I asked Lim in July 2013 to elaborate on and to clarify some of her statements in her poems that might prove cryptic to a reader unfamiliar with Chinese customs.

Author Biography

Pauline T. Newton, Southern Methodist University, USA

The interests of Pauline T. Newton, PhD, include twentieth-century (im)migrant US American literature. She will present an article titled, "Foils and Agency: Sexuality in the Works of Shirley Geok-lin Lim" at the National Women’s Studies Association in late 2014. Newton teaches Discernment and Discourse at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. She offers theme-based courses on travel narratives and graphic novels. She also serves on the President’s Commission on the Status of Women at SMU, and she travelled to Malaysia and Singapore in 2005 as a Fulbright-Hays scholar.
