Refinement of Characters According to Yaḥyā Ibn ʿAdī based on the Three Faculties of Human Soul

This article deals with the subject of the way of refinement of characters according to Yaḥyā Ibn ʿAdī base on the three faculties of human soul; the rational soul (al-nafs al-nāṭiqah), the irascible soul (al-nafs al-ghaḍabiyyah), and the concupiscent soul (al-nafs al-shahwiyyah), from which characters originated. The aim of this article is to reveal the methods formulated by Ibn ʿAdī to refine these characters. Based on the analytical method, this article concludes that the characters according to Yaḥyā Ibn ʿAdī emerged by certain factor that relate to these three faculties of human soul. The way to refine each character is depend on the factor of its emergence. Refinement of characters should consider these factors in order to achieve a fruitful result.
