â€œAsia-Pacific Writers: Voices from the Centre to the Peripheries,†a special issue of Asiatic, invites submissions of full articles which focus on voices of established and emerging writers in Asia and countries around the Pacific Rim. The Asia-Pacific region covers a huge geographical area which includes East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania. It is a region rich with a vast array of languages, religions, and cultures across the Asia-Pacific, and hence there would be many voices to represent each ethnic group and culture. This special issue of Asiatic aims to develop a new understanding on how recent social, cultural, economic, and political developments are contributing to new discussions about the Centre and Peripheries in this diverse and fast-changing region. How do recent literary and cultural texts from the Asia-Pacific region challenge the idea of Centre and Peripheries? How does the emergence of peripheral literatures offer new, complex identities beyond such binaries? How can recent developments shed new light on our understanding of world literature?

We seek abstracts for papers that will provide new dimensions and perspectives on this area of study. This special issue is scheduled to be published in June 2022.

Areas of interest for this issue broadly include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Wealth and poverty in Asia-Pacific
    • Greening Asia-Pacific
    • Creative arts in Asia-Pacific
    • Religion and spirituality in Asia-Pacific
    • The digital in Asia-Pacific arts and literature
    • Asia-Pacific on film
    • Postmodern architecture
    • Multiculturalism and urban space.

We welcome any forms of representation regardless of language but manuscripts submitted must be in English.

Papers are by no means limited to these themes. We welcome papers related to other concerns associated with literature and/or other art forms in Asia and the Pacific Rim. Additionally, we would like to invite submissions of poems and book reviews which specifically deal with Asia-Pacific experiences and/or issues in the region.

Asiatic: IIUM Journal of English Language and Literature is highly regarded and indexed by, among others, Scopus, Thomson Reuters and MLA databases. It is also listed in the Council of Editors of Learned Journals. Since it is an open-access journal, it has greater visibility and a large global readership and is widely cited. The journal invites submissions for a special issue on Digital Trends in Language and Literature, focusing on the Asian context in the 21st century, scheduled to be published in June 2021 (Vol. 15 No. 1).

The increasing availability and accessibility of the Internet in the 21st century in Asia have transformed the landscape of language use in innovative ways. New forms of interactions and activities are produced online daily, leading to new affordances. Research in language has always been based on relatively stable concepts. However, with the advent of Web 2.0, basic concepts such as text have to be re-defined as people’s lives go online (Barton & Lee, 2013). In literary studies, the digital has given rise to many exciting developments in the region, such as Asian science fiction and Instapoetry.

Despite these developments, many issues have remained unexplored. Therefore, to respond to the evolution of language and literature in the digital age, Asiatic invites article submissions on possible topics and areas of focus, which may include, but are not restricted to:

    1. Asian languages in globalised contexts
    2. Asian sci-fi/fantasy/steampunk works
    3. Corpus linguistic/multimodal stylistics/experimental approaches to digital texts
    4. Digital literacy/literacy studies
    5. Digital natives/digital immigrants in language and literature
    6. Digital sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and word coinage on social media platforms and literature
    7. Digital world-building in literature
    8. Identity and diversity in linguistic and literary varieties
    9. Language acquisition in the digital age (not limited to English)
    10. Digital approaches and methods in the study of literature/literary research.

Asiatic invites engaging and well-argued essays that cover some of the above-mentioned issues or any other important facets and dimensions of the digitalisation in the Asian context.

Abstracts of no more than 250 words along with six keywords and the author’s brief biography (85 words) are due by 20 October 2020.

Notification of selection will be emailed by 31 October 2020.

The deadline for submissions of full papers (5000-7000 words) and creative pieces (max 3000 words) is 31 December 2020.

Guest Editor:  Dr. Normala Othman (King Saud University, Riyadh, KSA)

English has been around in West Asia for centuries, as long as colonisation has taken place. Economic stability within the region has seen to the exponential progress in education and academic activities. Aligning themselves as global players, countries in the region have come to see the English language as a strategic communicative tool to achieve their international goals. Thus, English has been inching into a civilisation as old as the history of mankind from the Nabatean empire, stretching from Jordan to Saudi Arabia, to the land of the prophets in Palestine. This provides richness in the linguistic diversity and recorded literature of this ancient region. Arabic remains the major language in the West Asian countries, closely guarded by the Egyptian and Arabian peoples and cultures. Efforts to adopt English as the other language, in addition to Arabic, began a while ago with the strong support of governments introducing English in the education curriculum starting from the elementary years. As in all other communities, the use of English outside the school has met with plenty of resistance, mainly for the sake of maintaining identities and cultures.

This special issue of Asiatic explores the diachronic or synchronic issues with regard to the English language and literature in West Asia, particularly Arabia, that reflects the dynamicity of resistance, change, acceptance as well as maintenance among the communities in the region. Thus, we invite contributions which discusses and describes the state of English in West Asia within any theories of linguistics and literature.

Preliminary considerations begin with a 300-word proposal of original research which have not been previously published. The proposal should have clear objectives, theoretical framework and research design to support the title. It should also be a work in-progress evidenced by the richness of the brief content and clarity of the presentation.

The proposal should be emailed in Word document to Dr. Normala Othman (norothman@ksu.edu.sa) or Professor M.A. Quayum (mquayum@gmail.com) by October 1, 2019.  If the proposal is accepted, a final draft of 5000-7000 words should be submitted by February 1, 2020. Please note that British spelling and the MLA style should be adhered to. There will be a minimal fee to cover operating expenses.

    Proposal Deadline: October 1, 2019

    Paper Deadline: February 1, 2020
